Bell & Howell 414PD Zoomatic Director Series

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

Clavadetes, no?

=================================

It would be difficult to say which is the most famous 35mm film in the world, with so many contenders, and I wouldn't be able to say what the case is for the 16mm format either, but I do know which is the most famous 8mm film in the world. And by far. It is very short, only 28 seconds, and silent. But it has been analyzed to the most improbable extremes for decades. It is the Zapruder film: the film that Abraham Zapruder made of the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963.

The Texan businessman (of Ukrainian Jewish origin) Abraham Zapruder took advantage of President Kennedy's visit to his city to film the presidential cavalcade, as he was an avid fan of amateur cinema. For this he used his Bell & Howell 414PD Zoomatic Director Series camera, one of the best on the market; the emulsion was Kodachrome II in color and without sound. The camera is driven by a spring motor, without electricity, has a photometer that can regulate the aperture automatically and manual or motor-assisted zoom (with controls on the top).

After some searching, I managed to get my hands on a Bell & Howell 414PD camera, practically identical to the one used by Zapruder. In fact, the only difference I found is the lack of indicators on the zoom controls on the top. However, there are MANY variants of these Bell & Howell Zoomatic cameras.

In this particular image you can see the comparison between the official photograph taken by the National Archives of the authentic A. Zapruder camera, and my copy, which I have “tuned” to resemble it. That is why I have put both a label that the FBI stuck on it as the crime evidence that it was, as well as a piece of tape on the top where it seems that they (probably also the FBI) wrote “Kennedy”. Nailed it, right?
