Picture taken with my Rolleiflex Original (K1 612) made in 1929; Carl Zeiss Tessar f3.8 / 75mm lens; Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film, respooled to 620 format, developed in with the Bellini C41 kit.
During the III Carline War (1872-1876), the main battles took place in Euskadi, Navarre, the Maestrat and Catalonia. The campaigns were complex and often blurring into guerrilla warfare, but let's say that in the summer of 1873, the liberals, with a column of about 1200 men under the command of Brigadier Josep Cabrinetti, freed Puigcerdà from the Carlist siege and pursued them to central Catalonia. The Carlists, about 1000 men commanded by General Francesc Savalls, prepared an ambush in the mountain village of Alpens.
In the afternoon of July 9th, 1873, general Savalls let the liberal troops begin to enter the town from the Prats de Lluçanés road (from the south, not the current road from Sant Agustí, to the east), and then surrounded them, with most of the town still in Carlist hands. The combat was mainly urban, and apart from surprise and experience troops, the Carlists had control of the church, where they stationed snipers. It seems that it was one of these who, from the bell tower, killed Brigadier Cabrinetti with a shot right at the point where I took the photograph.
It would be nice to say that this view was the last that Cabrinetti saw, but it seems that the shot hit him in the back of the head. With the death of the commander, the liberal resistance weakened and most of them, about 900, were taken prisoner, along with some cannons. There is talk of about 150 killed, mainly liberals.
Had Cabrinetti seen "Saving Private Ryan", he would have known how wise is to blow up the bell tower with a gun before an urban assault.
