Durant la guerra era una gravera i molts presoners hi foren executats. Encara després, aquest lloc fou un "camp de batalla" diferent, la anomenada guerra de les creus. Un convent carmelita s'instalà al edifici contigu i plantà aquesta creu en el lloc on moriren desenes de polonesos cristians a mans dels nazis. Però donada la significiació d'Auschwitz per als jueus i que la inmensa majoria de victimes eren jueves això comportà un enfrontament... que s'agreujà amb l'aparició de centenars de creus tot al entorn de Auschwitz. El 1993 el convent es traslladà, però la creu continua a lloc (però només aquesta...).
Dins Auschwitz I, al pati emmurallat entre els blocs 10 i 11 hi havia un mur on els presoners foren afusellats per milers. Aquests dos barracons eren un dels pitjors llocs fins i tot dins d'Auschwitz: el Block 10 s'utilitzava per a experiments mèdics amb presoners que sovint provocaven amputacions o mort; i el Block 11 era la presó del camp, on els presoners eren torturats i executats. Aquí es va provar Zyklon-B per primera vegada en humans, en una de les seves cèl·les subterranies. Aquest de la imatge és el Block 11, vist des de la carretera exterior. La gespa en primer pla era una gravera on molts presoners foren executats.
Auschwitz. Què més puc dir més enllà d’aquest toponim en alemany d’una vila polonesa. Tots ja sabeu què fou, de 1940 a 1945. Aquí es creà un camp de concentració per la explotació salvatge i mortal dels enemics del III Reich. Però sobretot a partir de 1943 i a la seva extensió (i futur camp independent) de Birkenau: l’extermini dels jueus europeus a nivell industrial.

During the war it was a gravel pit and many prisoners were executed there. Even later, this place was a different "battlefield", the so-called war of the crosses. A Carmelite convent settled in the adjacent building and planted this cross in the place where dozens of Polish Christians died at the hands of the Nazis. But given the significance of Auschwitz for the Jews and that the vast majority of victims were Jews, this led to a confrontation... which was exacerbated by the appearance of hundreds of crosses all around Auschwitz. In 1993 the convent moved, but the cross is still in place (but only this one...).
In the walled courtyard betweeen blocks 10 and 11 there was an execution wall, where prisoners where shoot in the thousands. These two were some of the worst places even inside Auschwitz: Block 10 was used for medical experiments with prisoners often leading to amputations or death; and Block 11 was the prison and torture block. Here was Zyklon-B first tried on humans, in one of it's cells. This on the image is Block 11 as seen from the outside of the camp. In the foreground, the grass space was a gravel pit where a lot of prisoners were work to death and executed.
Auschwitz. What else can I say beyond this toponym in German of a Polish town. You all know what it was, from 1940 to 1945. Here a concentration camp was created for the savage and deadly exploitation of the enemies of the Third Reich. But especially from 1943 and in its extension (and future independent camp) of Auschwitz II - Birkenau. The extermination of European Jews at an industrial level.
