Records de les bombes / Recalling the bombs
IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

Picture taken with a Rolleicord I-a "Polizei" (K3-541), made for the German police in 1939; Carl Zeiss Triotar f3.5/75mm; Ilford FP4+, developed with HC110.
This beam of the XVI Century covered market in Granollers has the year 1940 engraved. Why? Other beams in the same roof have much older years, like 1731. But this one was repaired in 1940 because all this quarter of the structure was blown up in 1938 in an aerial raid by the Italian fascist airforce.
Granollers was bombed by the Italian fascist aviation that collaborated with Franco during the civil war. On May 31, 1938, at 9:05 a.m., five SM79 bombers of the Aviazzione Legionaria based in Mallorca attacked the completely defenseless town (there were no AA guns, nor fighters in the air) with the supposed intention of hitting the power station, the railroad and aviation workshops, but they hit the commercial center, especially the Porxada medieval market square and its surroundings, full of people searching for food at that time.
The total number of dead on the same day and wounded who died in the following days was 224, all civilians. Most were buried in a mass grave in the municipal cemetery.
