El conjunt de les esglésies de Egara, a Terrassa, és força interesant i complex. En origen, fou un nucli d'origen romà, tot i que només es coneix la part que agafà importancia amb la creació del bisbat cap al 450 d.C. Estaba format per una catedral i dues esglésies anexes cap al nord. Aquest conjunt continuà en època visigòtica fins la seva desaparició per la invasió musulmana del s. VIII, tot i que el bisbat continua fins al 778 com a mínim. Ja al s. IX es reconstrueixen les esglesies, però subordinades al bisbat de Barcelona.
L'església romànica de Santa Maria d'Egara aprofita parcialment les restes de l'antiga catedral tardo-romana i visigòtica d'Egara.

The group of churches of Egara, in Terrassa, is quite interesting and complex. Originally, it was a municipium of Roman origin, although only the part that gained importance with the creation of the bishopric around 450 AD is known. It consisted of a cathedral and two adjoining churches to the north. This complex continued in the Visigoth era until its disappearance due to the Muslim invasion of the VIII Century, although the bishopric continues until at least 778. Already in the IX-XII Century the churches are rebuilt in Romanesque style, but subordinated to the bishopric of Barcelona.
The still surviving romanesque church of Santa Maria d'Egara reused part of the late ancient & visigoth cathedral of Egara.
