IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

========================

Picture taken with a Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta 531/2 medium format camera, made c.1936; Carl Zeiss Tessar f.38 / 105mm lens; Ilford FP4+ film.

The armoured cupola of Marckolsheim-Sud was damaged and put out of service by several direct hits of a 88mm Flak gun. The other cupola was buried by a near miss Stuka bomb.

In the Marckolsheim-Sud casemate of the Maginot Line there is the museum corresponding to the so-called Maginot Line of the Rhine. It was a weaker sector than the one in the north, since it had the river as an immense obstacle in front of it. But a few days before the French surrender, with the casemates completely abandoned of all infantry and artillery support, the Wehrmach carried out an amphibious operation more for show and self-hype than anything else, showing that it could "break" the Maginot Line (they did not try that with fully suported fortifications a couple of months before...).

It was the operation Kleiner Bär (June 15, 1940), which quickly crossed the Rhine, and on reaching Marckolsheim attacked the casemate head-on with intense fire from Flak 88mm and Stukas. With both cupolas damaged or buried in rubble, the infantry were able to close in and blast the embrasures with explosives, forcing the surrender of the garrison on 17 June 1940.

Now it's a museum, but was closed this day.
