Devorar, devorar! / Hunger frenzy

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

============================================

The mass of griffon vultures, about fifty, throw themselves on the carcass of the cane, in Alinyà. Often nothing is visible, a mass of brown feathered bodies thrashing about. But when they face you, you see how all the pieces of meat are chopped up and swallowed in a frenzy, including whole rabbits (it's all dead cattle from farms or slaughterhouses, don't suffer). In fact, the rabbits almost seem to explode, under the barrage of beaks that dismember them.

For many years I wanted to go and see a vulture hide in the Pyrenees, especially since the one in Alinyà came out on the TV3 birding program "Tocats de l'Ala". Between the pandemic and other issues, it took me until September 2023 to be able to go there. In the end I went to the same one in Alinyà, due to its relative proximity. Unfortunately, it is more difficult to see the black vulture there, and the Egyptian vulture had already migrated to Africa. So we're sure to see a lot of griffon vultures and we're hoping to see the star of the show, the bearded vulture.
