Press Graflex 5x7

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

============================================

This is one of the cameras I've wanted to get my hands on for the longest time. The "queen" of the large-format reflex Graflex. In fact, as its name indicates, it was designed expressly with a clientele of press photographers in mind, since its ability to frame and focus the photograph without the need for ground glass, as well as a very high speed of up to 1/1500 second, they made it stand at the top of the benefits. Apart from that it has interchangeable lenses and the ability to use a ground glass if the occasion calls for it. The position and tension of the shutter curtain can be seen from above without tilting the camera (although this specimen is missing a piece for this).

It was manufactured from 1907 to 1923, only in 5x7 format. This particular specimen seems (by the serial number) to have been manufactured towards the end, around 1916-1920. The lens is a Bausch & Lomb Tessar, Ic Series f/4.5. The shutter works, although with some "clogging" and definitely needs cleaning and tuning. All in all, I was able to take photos with it, although it also has cracks in the wood around the lens.

Probably Frank Hurley had one or more of these cameras as his main equipment for the 1914 Shackleton Endurance expedition in Antartica.
