Tornant a La Salut

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

==========================

Dry collodion plate, Sutton process (Rapid Dry Collodion) in 4x5 format; taken with a Graflex Crown Graphic, made c. 1949; Kodak Anastigmat f4.5 lens; re-used collodion and gum arabic; exposed for 15 s. at f5.6.

After Major Russell's tannin dry collodion plates, the obvious and easy step is Thomas Sutton's "rapid" plates, described in 1862. It's really easy because the only change is to replace tannin as a preservative with gum arabic. The sensitivity is noticeably increased (although maybe just a bit slower than wet plate). Here it would have needed about 3 minutes with only tannin added, and maybe about 45 seconds. including 25-50% gum arabic. But with just gum, I was able to do this dry plate in 15 seconds, and I could probably get it down to 12. With a bright lens I can do a portrait in about 5 or 6 seconds.

Sadly, at least till now, an ugly yet continuous sponje-like pattern appears all along the emulson. Maybe with newer collodion.There are also some nasty-looking trickles
