Rochester és una petita ciutat anglesa al est de Londres, de llarga historia.
Com indica el seu nom (tots els chester del mapa d'Anglaterra son antigues ciutats o forts romans), els romans ja hi construiren una fortificació, sobre la antiga Durobrivae celta. A l'edat mitjana s'hi establí un bisbat i els normands hi construiren l'imponent castell; de fet, fou Odo, el mateix germà de Guillem el Conqueridor, qui ordenà la seva construcció el 1067, tot i que la torre actual data del s. XII.
La catedral és d'estil romanic i gotic, i és de les més antigues d'Anglaterra.

Rochester is a small English city east of London, with a long history.
As its name indicates (all the chesters on the map of England are old Roman cities or forts), the Romans already built a fortification there, on top of the ancient Celtic Durobrivae. In the Middle Ages a bishopric was established there and the Normans built the imposing castle; in fact, it was Odo, the half-brother of William the Conqueror, who ordered its construction in 1067, although the current tower dates from the XII Century.
The cathedral is of Romanesque and Gothic style, and is one of the oldest in England.
