La Kodak Retina Ib és un dels submodels més bonics de aquesta famosa i diversa familia de càmeres telemetriques (o no) de 35mm. Potser les millors càmeres que feu Kodak (però a Alemania, això sí).
La Retina Ib fou fabricada a Stuttgart entre 1954 i 1957, com a versió més barata (sense telemetre) de la Retina IIb. És una càmera de 35mm, plegable, amb objectiu fixe i sense telemetre ni fotometre. Per tant en certa mesura és com una versió més moderna del mateix concepte que la Leica I (A).
Però aquesta "manca" de capacitats és la seva virtud, juntament amb la facilitat amb que es pot portar a la butxaca, gracies a les formes arrodonides i a que es pot plegar. Menys parts vol dir menys coses que poden fallar i menys preocupacions. La llum i la distancia es poden estimar a ull, i així et pons concentrar en enquadrar i buscar el millor moment per fer la foto.
Aquesta en concret és un dels models inicials de producció (1954?), i compta amb un objectiu Schenider Kreutznach Retina-Xenar f2.8 / 50mm. Curiosament té el "recordador" de pel·licula en anglès però la roda d'enfoc en metres, no en peus com li tocaria. Per desgracia l'obturador no funciona, però potser es pot arreglar.

The Kodak Retina Ib is one of the most beautiful submodels in this famous and diverse family of 35mm (or not) rangefinder cameras. Perhaps the best cameras Kodak made (but in Germany, of course).
The Retina Ib was manufactured in Stuttgart between 1954 and 1957, as a cheaper version (without rangefinder) of the Retina IIb. It is a 35mm camera, foldable, with a fixed lens and without rangefinder nor light meter. So to some extent it is like a more modern version of the same concept as the Leica I (A).
But this “lack” of capabilities is its virtue, along with the ease with which it can be carried in your pocket, thanks to the rounded shapes and the fact that it can be folded. Fewer parts means fewer things that can fail and fewer worries. Light and distance can be guessed, so you can focus on framing and finding the best time to take the photo.
This in particular is one of the initial production models (1954?), and has a Schenider Kreutznach Retina-Xenar f2.8 / 50mm lens. Interestingly it has the film "reminder" in English but the focus wheel in meters, not feet as it would be usual in this case. Unfortunately the shutter doesn’t work, but maybe it can be fixed.
