El monestir pallarès de Sant Pere de Burgal, al sud d'Escaló, es troba en un tranquil mirador sobre la vall de la Noguera Pallaressa. Ja s'el coneix des del 859, suposadament, en un text on es menciona el seu abad. Tot i diversos canvis de comunitat monacal, ja en època moderna pràcticament no tenia activitat.
S'en conserva bona part de l'església romànica, especialment els àbsides, que preservaren preciosos frescos actualment exposats al MNAC de Barcelona. Al sud de l'església queden uns pocs murs de la resta del monestir.

The quite ancient Sant Pere de Burgal abbey is one of the few located in the high Pyrenees. Although known from the IX Century, already in the middle ages began it's decadence and was integrated into other abbeys, like Gerri.
Now only ruins remain, notably of the romanesque church, and it's apses. There still survived romanesque frescoes, now preserved in the MNAC museum, in Barcelona.
