Dins la cova / We are still inside the cave

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

===========================================

The famous caves of Zugarramurdi, of witches fame, are actually a natural tunnel, formed by the Olabidea River, or "Infernuko Erreka" (Hell's stream). Interestingly, they do not have only two entrances, but at least four, three very large. It is a spectacular place, which will always be associated with the witches who seem to have meet here until the XVII Century.

The so-called witches (sorginak) gathered here, more specifically in a smaller area of the caves and the meadow in front, known as the "goat's meadow", the Akelarre. In fact this place is the origin for the term akelarre, meaning a diabolic meeting. In 1610 the Spanish Inquisition made a witch hunt that killed 11 people, 6 of which were burned alive at the stake. There are a couple of films about it, one of a more historical one, and the other more comic-terror in style.
