La preciosa famila d'exuberants càmeres de rodet de Kodak d'inicis del s. XX, les Kodak Folding Pocket, comptaven amb un element suplementari que les permetia revertir a una tecnología (lleugerament) anterior.
En efecte, el Kodak Combination Back convertia aquestes càmeres de rodet format 118 o 122 en càmeres de plaques. De fet aquest tipus de transformacions eren usuals en unes dècades (1900-1930) en que encara varen conviure ambdues tipologies de fotografía, fins que s'imposà la pel·licula. Fins i tot Contax i Rollei comptaven amb aquests anexes per les seves cameres molt més modernes.
Aquest exemplar en concret de Combination Back és per una KFP Nº3A Special. És a dir, permet emprar plaques de 8x14 cm en comptes de rodets de format 122. El fet que indiqui Special significa que l'acabat del cuiro és d'alta qualitat, per fer joc amb les cameres de més alta gama; però de fet encaixa en qualsevol KFP Nº3A, com es pot veure en aquestes fotografies.
El conjunt complert està format per el darrera de la càmera on hi va una tapa desmontable; amb aquesta posada, es pot fer servir rodets fins i tot amb el Combination Back. Però els elements essencials per fer servir plaques son el vidre esmeril·lat i el porta-plaques doble. Ambdos s'encaixaven en l'espai de la tapa desmontable. Cal dir que aquest Combination Back ésta com nou i el més probable és que mai es fes servir. El vaig comprar amb caixa i tot. Aquests Comb. Backs. són força escasos i em va costar bastant més que cap càmera a les que el puc encaixar!!
Com a extra, val a dir que ara hi ha algú (J. Lane) que torna a produir plaques de gelatino-bromur, fins i tot de mida 3A, pel que tinc ganes de posar en funcionament tot el sistema, 100 anys després...

The precious "family" of lush Kodak roll-film cameras from early 20th Century, the Kodak Folding Pockets, had an additional element that allowed them to revert to a slightly older technology.
Indeed, the Kodak Combination Back converted these 118 or 122 format roll-film cameras into dry-plate cameras. In fact, this type of transformation was usual in those years (1900-1940) in which both types of photography still coexisted, until the film won. Even Contax and Rollei had these attachments for their much more modern cameras.
This particular Combination Back is for a KFP Nº3A Special. In other words, it allows these cameras to use plates of 8x14 cm instead of 122 format roll-film. The detail that it indicates "Special" means that the leather finish is of high quality, to match with the cameras of the Kodak top range; but in fact it fits in any KFP Nº3A, even much older models, as you can see in these photographs.
The complete set is formed by the back of the camera where there is a detachable lid; With this part mounted, you can use roll film even with the Combination Back in place. But the essential elements to use dry-plates are the ground glass and the double plate holder. Both were fitted in the space for the detachable lid. It must be said that this Combination Back is in mint condition and most likely it was never used. I bought it with its box and everything. These Combination Backs are pretty scarce and it cost me several times more than any camera that I can fit it in!
As an extra, it's worth mentioning that there is now someone (J. Lane) that produces again glass dry plates, even in size 3A, so I want to put the entire system into operation 100 years later. ..
