L'ametralladora de Richard Gatling fou un dels avanpassats de l'autentica primera ametralladora, la de Hiram Maxim. Però a finals del segle XX retornà com a una arma molt més bèstia del que fou, pel senzill procediment de substituir la manivela per un motor elèctric.
