Aquest combat entre un "traci" contra un murmillo (el més pesat) era un classic. El traci era més lleuger i agil, com si fos un aguila; el seu oponent s'amagava com un peix o una murena entre les roques, i era molt més pesat.

The thraex ("tracian") was quite lighty armed, so he tried to attack with his sica or curved dagger in the few spots left on the murmillo. The murmillo was one of the heaviest gladiators, with a lot of protection, but was slower. It was compared to a fight between an eagle and a lamprey.
