Unicum
Aquí podeu apreciar amb detall aquest magnific (tot i que certament imperfecte) obturador pneumatic de finals del s. XIX i inicis del XX. Els models de Bausch & Lomb Unicum daurats i cromats foren produits entre 1897 i 1904, mentre que posteriorment i fins el 1912 es continuaren produint però amb una estètica més sobria negra i cromada. La roda de dalt permet seleccionar la velocitat d'obturació entre els modes T, B 1/100 i fins 1 segon. Les velocitats lentes s'obtenen per mitjà del embol pneumatic de la dreta. El de la esquerra permet disparar a distancia la càmera amb una pera d'aire.
Aquesta càmera és força sorprenent i extranya. De fet no sembla tractar-se de cap model de producció usual. Buscant el bonic obturador pneumatic Bausch & Lomb Unicum em vaig trobar aquesta càmera en prou bon estat, i relativament bé de preu. Per tant fou l’obturador el que em va centrar la atencio, i no fou fins un cop la vaig tenir que no vaig poder considerar la resta de la màquina.
Encara no tinc clar al 100% la identificació, tot i que obviament és una Houghton Ensign britanica, com queda indicat per la marca. I concretament sembla una Houghton Ensign No.3, molt similar a la Kodak No.3 Folding Pocket (emprant aparentment el mateix rodet format 118).
L’element extrany és que pel conjunt de caracteristiques de la càmara, tota ella sembla produida en algun moment dels anys 20. Però en canvi l’obturador Unicum inicial fou produit per força entre 1898 i 1904. De fet només he pogut determinar el model concret amb un cataleg de Ensign en PDF… del 1930! No es extrany trobar-se amb un decalatge d’un o pocs anys entre les lents i l’obturador i el cos de les càmeres d’aquesta època; però aquí estem parlant d’entre 25 i 30 anys, el que descarta qualsevol pràctica usual. En l'altre cataleg Ensign que he trobat, del 1912, encara no apareix una càmera completament comparable. Es que ni tansols em cap que un usuari volgues voluntariament modificar una càmera “nova” amb un obturador aleshores ja completament antiquat. La darrera possibilitat que hi entra es que algú molt posteriorment va crear aquest mostre de Frankenstein a partir de peces trobades en el món del col·leccionisme anticuari.

A nice frontal view of the magnificient Bausch & Lomb Unicum pneumatic shutter. It was a breaking design in the last years of the XIX Century, but by 1905 it was being surpassed by other designs, notably German ones. This chrome-nickel style was typical of 1897-1904 Unicum shutters. Later and until 1912 they were produced in black & chrome. The upper dial sets the speed and loads the spring. Speeds goes from 1s. to 1/100 plus B and T modes. The slow speeds use the right side piston, and the left side piston is used to release the shutter with a bulb.
This highly unusual camera is not a normal production model of any kind. I saw (and bought) it on eBay while searching for the beautiful Bausch & Lomb Unicum pneumatic shutter. So it was the shutter itself which centered my atention, and I did not look in detail to the camera body until I had it in my hands.
To my astonishment there’s a WIDE chronological gap between the shutter-lens ensemble and the body. The Unicum shutter is of early XX Century, probably made before 1904, and the lens surely made arround that date. But the camera, while obviously marked as a british Houghton Ensign, did not match that time frame. In fact it looks like it is a Ensign No.3. I finally found this model of body in a scanned Ensign catalogue… of 1930!! All points to the body being made in the 20’s, that is, 25 to 30 years after the shutter. Obviously by then, the Unicum was not only old, it was obsolete. Who knows why somebody conected the parts to make this Frankenstein’s camera. Or somebody (maybe an old, conservative, man) wanted the shutter he was used to in a new body, or maybe much decades latter a collector mixed the parts bought separately. Who knows...
