La Bandera Negra tingué protagonisme tant el 1714 com el 2014. En el món occidental empre ha significat la no rendició, el revers de la bandera blanca. S'en coneixen exemples arreu de la historia, i fa 300 anys portaven la frase "Viurem lliures o morirem". La renovada bandera negra porta l'estel de la Llibertat, agermanant-la amb l'Estelada, i alhora la creu de Santa Eulalia, enllaçant dos simbols de la llibertat de Catalunya amb el color de la resistencia ferma.

The Black Flag, in western symbolism means no surrender, it's the antagonist of the white flag of surrender. In the dramatic siege of Barcelona and Cardona, in the war of 1714, a black flag with the words "Viurem lliures o morirem" flough on the walls; it meant "We'll live free or we'll die". An American similar emblem just 60 years later, was the "join or die". Three hundred years later, a modern black flag unites the Santa Eulalia cross, tha one of the most potent symbols of Catalan political freedom, and the star of the modern "starry" flag of Catalan independence. No surrender till Victory and Freedom from Spain (and France).
