Bahamut the Peacock
Bahamut in Arabian/Persian/Sumerian/Whatever mythology was the gigantic fish-turtle-whale thing on which the world rested, and shares a root word with "Behemoth" (it's one of the ways we can reliably date the Book of Job to REALLY FREAKING OLD). Dungeons & Dragons made Bahamut into a dragon, and Final Fantasy followed suit by changing him into what appears to be a bird of paradise. Can't deny that it's pretty, though.
