Lima July 1974

Street Photo, Lima Peru, July 1974

I decided to get my photo taken by one of the many street photographers in Lima, Peru. It was quite an interesting process. There was no film involved, it was all done using paper. The first shot (on the right) was a paper negative. This was developed in a tiny darkroom inside the large-format camera, complete with developer, fixer and rinse. Then the photographer placed the finished negative, still wet, in front of the lens, together with a paper negative of a suitable backdrop (in this case the Ministry of Education) and took a picture of that, essentially a crude photo-comp. That exposed paper, which was of course a positive now, was again developed inside the camera., and handed to me still wet. I asked for the original negative, and he gave it to me. Forget how much this cost, but it was not very much.
