Courting Robber Flies

Found at Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), in Cachoeiras de Macacu municipality in state of Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil.

Atomosiini of sorts. Thinking Oidardis sp. They were in the 5-7mm range. Prey is a beetle, possibly Monotomidae.

When I first found them, the male was doing a courtship dance above the female. Here it had bobbed down to within a mm or 2 above the female. Shortly after this shot, the male landed on the same branch a bit below the female.

Found on Green Trail (Trilha Verde).

Single exposure, significantly cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
