Ditomyiid fly (Symmerus sp.) pupal exuvium
Symmerus sp. Found at Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods SNA in east-central Wisconsin. Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA.
Found projecting 3-4mm out of debarked section of American beech log in mixed hardwood forest. Looked relatively fresh, so presumably the fly had emerged not too long before I found the exuvium.
Post-extraction. I very carefully pulled the exuvium out of the emergence hole with my fingertips and dropped it on the log for some shots.
Single exposure, significantly cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-26EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.
