Gall Midge (Asphondylia rudbeckiaeconspicua) galls
Asphondylia rudbeckiaeconspicua Osten Sacken, 1870. Thanks to Joshua C'deBaca for confirming my tentative determination on bugguide. Found at Wazee Lake Recreation Area in west central Wisconsin. Jackson County, Wisconsin, USA.
Found on what I'm pretty sure is a Rudbeckia flower. A pupal exuvium is visible protruding from the left gall where an adult fly has emerged. I didn't become aware of the exuvium until I was processing the photos. Otherwise I would have taken more detailed photos of it.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-26EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.
