Dasylechia atrox habitat

Dane County, southern Wisconsin, USA.

This is a large oak tree (slightly left of center) beside a trail running between prairie and oak/hickory forest/savanna. Trail is just in front of the tree, but obscured by prairie plants.

Prime real estate for Dasylechia atrox.

The bare dead branch hanging down amidst the mostly leafy canopy serves as an ideal perching spot. Sun exposure for warmth, check. Proximity to prairie plants and the bees they attract, check. Proximity to leafy canopies of oak and hickory trees and the vespids they attract, check.
