Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox)
Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Found at Hickory Hill Conservancy Park in Cross Plains in southern Wisconsin. Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.
Found in oak/hickory forest/savanna. It was perched about 10-11 feet up on a branch overhanging the trail sticking out from a standing dead debarked tree at trailside.
The 2 flying insects above the robber are free-loader flies. The robber had just finished sucking the bodily fluids from a yellowjacket and had discarded the cadaver some seconds before this photo was taken.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-26EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
