Robber Fly (Psilocurus nudiusculus)

Male Psilocurus nudiusculus Loew, 1874. Found at Resaca De La Palma State Park in far southern Texas. Cameron County, Texas, USA.

This species was perching mostly on the ground or within a few inches of the ground on objects. This individual chose a rotting fruit on which to sit to survey the surrounds for potential prey. As these fruits were relatively small, this fly was approximately an inch off the ground.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
