Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox)

Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Found at Rocky Run Fishery Area in south central Wisconsin. Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA.

When I originally noticed this individual it was about 10 feet above the ground on a dead branch in an oak tree in oak/hickory forest/savanna. It had a bee as prey. After a few minutes it finished the meal, dropped the bee, and flew off to another tree. It landed on the trunk about 14 feet above the ground. After I got a couple shots there it took off and I lost track of it. This shot is one at the 10 foot level after it had dropped the bee.

Single exposure, significantly cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
