Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox) with prey

Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Found at Hickory Hill Conservancy Park in Cross Plains in southern Wisconsin. Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.

My friend Mike Reese and I refound this species in the exact same spot as we saw an individual a little more than a year earlier. It was perched about 7-8 feet up on the same Populus grandidentata sapling that was bent down close to the edge of the trail. It perched nicely for some shots by both of us. Prey is a yellowjacket. Found in mixed hardwood forest.

Single exposure, moderately cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
