Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox) with prey

Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Found at Rocky Run Fishery Area in south central Wisconsin. Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA.

When I originally noticed this individual it was about 8-9 feet above the ground on a small branch in an oak tree in oak/hickory forest/savanna. It had a yellowjacket as prey. After a few minutes it finished the meal, dropped the yellowjacket, and flew off to another oak tree. It landed on a branch about 4 feet above the ground. It moved to the underside of the branch where I got several shots before it flew off. This shot is one at the 8-9 foot level.

Single exposure, significantly cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
