Robber Fly (Andrenosoma fulvicaudum) with prey

Andrenosoma fulvicaudum (Say 1823). Found at Necedah NWR in central Wisconsin. Juneau County, Wisconsin, USA.

There were numerous individuals of this species hanging around this log. This one had snagged what I believe to be a sweat bee. After this shot, I had slowly and carefully maneuvered for a straight on face shot. As I was about to press the shutter release a sand wasp swooped in and attacked the robber causing it to drop the prey and fly off.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
