Robber Fly (Andrenosoma fulvicaudum) ovipositing

Female Andrenosoma fulvicaudum (Say 1823). Found at Necedah NWR in central Wisconsin. Juneau County, Wisconsin, USA.

She was ovipositing on a large log from a felled hardwood tree. This log was a few feet separated from a log pile. There were numerous individuals of this species hanging around this log which seemed to be pretty popular. More individuals were seen on the nearby log pile and other log piles along this same road.

Unfortunately, these particular reproductive efforts are a total waste. These logs are destined to be sold by the township (not the refuge) and probably turned into firewood. Sadly her progeny will be incinerated along with a whole host of other beings.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
