Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox)

Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Found at Hickory Hill Conservancy Park in Cross Plains in southern Wisconsin. Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.

My friend Mike Reese and I went out on a quest for these this day and we lucked into one (after Mike had found about a handful of 4-leaf clovers). It was perched about 7-8 feet up on a sapling that was bent down close to the edge of the trail. It perched nicely for some shots by both of us. Probably could have gotten some better angles but some inconsiderate women with unleashed dogs disturbed our session and the fly flew off not to be seen again. Found about 12:30PM in mixed hardwood forest.

There seems to be several free-loader flies on the sapling. Wonder if the robber had just finished a meal.

Single exposure, heavily cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
