Robber Fly
Found at Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, WSW of Oudtshoorn. Western Cape, South Africa.
Saw many of these small (7-9mm, I believe) robbers perching on branch tips during my days at this reserve. They exhibited the interesting behavior of curling the abdomen in and then straightening it back out. Not sure if both sexes did it or if this behavior was courtship related. This female seemed to be displaying for a hovering male and the curling seemed more pronounced.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
