Robber Fly (Pilica sp.)
Pilica sp. Found at La Selva Biological Station, near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. Heredia Province, Costa Rica.
Possibly P. formidolosa?
I saw several of these large, noisy, and very beautiful flies at various spots along the trails. There was a good amount of treefall on the reserve due to the May 2018 storm. These were found perching on the fallen trees. They are pretty wary so it took some stealth to get close.
