Robber Fly (Haplopogon cf. erinus)

Haplopogon cf. erinus Pritchard, 1941. Thanks to Eric Fisher for providing the species determination on bugguide. Found at Organ Mountains Recreation Area in southern New Mexico. Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA.

Found on shrub in dry desert wash. I was astonished to stumble across these little 3-4mm robbers. I had hiked to a nearby hill to look for hill-topping insects and was set to call it a day. On my way back to the vehicle I strolled a bit down a dry wash and there they were, perching on tips of shrub branches. Thought I would never see these in the wild. Very frustrating to photograph, though, as there was almost a constant breeze.

Single exposure, moderately cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
