Mating Robber Flies

Andrenosoma sp., presumably Andrenosoma igneum Bromley, 1929 based on Eric Fisher's determination on bugguide of a different individual at this same refuge. Found at Resaca De La Palma State Park in far southern Texas. Cameron County, Texas, USA.

I originally found the female alone on a fallen tree limb. She was moving up and down the length of the limb seemingly ovipositing. I followed her along taking pictures. Eventually a male flew down from above and they hooked up and mated.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
