Stilt-legged Fly feeding

Taeniaptera lasciva (Fabricius, 1798). Thanks to John F. Carr for providing the species determination on a related image on bugguide. Found at Resaca De La Palma State Park in far southern Texas. Cameron County, Texas, USA.

Feeding at sap flow/tree wound. A group of these flies were found on the trunk of a horizontally growing willow (?) tree in the dry resaca bed. There was a sap flow/wound on this tree as well as one on a vertically growing sapling within a couple feet of this one. Some of these flies were also on directly adjacent vegetation and on the nearby ground.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
