Hister Beetle
Hypocaccus fraternus (Say, 1825). Found at Grant Park in South Milwaukee in south-eastern Wisconsin. Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, USA.
This species is very common on Lake Michigan beaches. I find it mostly under driftwood and debris, but it can also be seen crawling out on the open sand. They look like little jewels when the sun reflects off their elytral 'mirrors'.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.
