Robber Fly

Female Prolepsis tristis (Walker, 1851). Found at Madera Canyon in Santa Rita Mountains. Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA.

She was flying around low to the ground in the general vicinity these pictures were taken. She landed on several occasions and appeared to oviposit into the soil.

When I was taking these pictures I did not know she was a Robber. I thought she was a Mydas Fly. First time I've seen a Prolepsis.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
