Robber Fly with prey

Female Heteropogon sp. Found at Resaca De La Palma State Park in far southern Texas. Cameron County, Texas, USA.

Prey is a termite reproductive.

Poor termites. I saw a swarm of reproductives disperse from an old rotten tree snag at forest edge. They dispersed into the forest opening which the trail ran through. With all the dragonflies flying around picking them off in the air, I'd be surprised if more than a handful survived. Those that 'ran the gauntlet' had to dodge the robbers.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
