Robber Fly (Diogmites lindigii) ovipositing

Diogmites lindigii (Schiner, 1868). Thanks to Dr. Eric Fisher for providing the species determination on related photo. Found at La Selva Biological Station, near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. Heredia Province, Costa Rica.

A very nicely patterned species that seems to mimic some of the wasps found in the same area.

Found at the Arboleda (Holdridge Arboretum). As I was strolling through the Arboleda grounds I noticed a wasp-like insect flying about 8-10 inches off the ground. I followed it until it arrived at a bare moist soil spot and landed. It proceeded to probe the soil surface until it found an appropriate spot and then dug the tip of its abdomen in. It stayed and oviposited in this spot for a while then proceeded to fly a short distance and stop at another spot to oviposit. I followed her around and took photos as she continued to move around until I finally lost track of her in flight.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
