Robber Fly (Andrenosoma fulvicaudum)

Andrenosoma fulvicaudum (Say 1823). Found at Pleasant Valley Conservancy SNA in southern Wisconsin. Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.

Found on fallen hardwood tree, hardwood forest/savanna.

They often 'hug' the bark, crouching down and looking like they are ready to pounce. Reminds me of a lion that has stalked to within striking distance. This is not what you want to see if you're another insect!

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
