Robber Fly with prey

Diogmites sp., I believe. Some sort of fly as prey. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in east-central Kansas. Chase County, Kansas, USA.

Several of these (at least 2 species of Diogmites) were patrolling the prairie flowers at edge of hardwood forest. They hunt from flower heads and from tops of other plants interspersed in the flowers. Plenty of prey around the flowers to be had.

Fortunately for me this one found a hanging place that allowed me to get some sky as background.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
