Robber Fly (Dasylechia atrox) with prey

Dasylechia atrox (Williston 1883). Prey is a bumble bee. Found at Pleasant Valley Conservancy SNA in southern Wisconsin. Dane County, Wisconsin, USA.

Found perched about chest high on bare (leafless) oak branch tip, edge of mixed hardwood forest.

I had scared something off this same perch a couple days ago. Didn't get a good look, but it did look like a bumble bee and I suspected it might be this beast. Very glad I had the 180mm with me today!

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
