Robber Fly (Stichopogon sp.)

Stichopogon sp. Thanks to Greg Daniels for providing the generic determination via private email. Found at Euthella Bridge picnic/rest area on Carnarvon Highway north of Roma. Queensland, Australia.

These reminded me so much of Townsendia in our Nearctic fauna. They were very similar in size at about 4mm and had very similar perching habits. They perched mostly on tips of short grasses and stems, but also on dead leaves and on the bare sand. They were found on a small sandy patch on the creek bank.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
