Robber Fly with globular springtail prey

Stichopogon sp., I believe. Found at Euthella Bridge picnic/rest area on Carnarvon Highway north of Roma. Queensland, Australia.

These were found on a small sandy patch on the creek bank. I did not witness the actual capture of the prey. The fly was already perched on the sand with prey. It proceeded to fly and land on a dead leaf that was sitting on the sand. The fly is 4-6mm long.

Sprintails (Collembola) were only first recorded as prey items of Asilidae back in 2011 in this article.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
