Robber Fly (Laphria thoracica) with prey

Laphria thoracica Fabricius 1805 male (thanks to Ben Coulter for confirming the species determination on bugguide). Tortoise beetle as prey. Found in mixed hardwood forest at Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods SNA in east-central Wisconsin. Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA.

This was after the prey had been sucked dry and discarded. Notice the small opportunistic feeder flies hanging out under the robber.

Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
