Robber Fly (Blepharepium sonorensis) with prey

Blepharepium sonorensis Papavero & Bernardi 1973. Thanks to Eric Fisher for confirming the species determination on bugguide. Found at San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. Cochise County, Arizona, USA.

Prey is a honeybee.

Found in grassland bordering hardwoods along San Pedro River. Very difficult to photograph. When it has prey it tends to perch deep inside the vegetation. As this was a thorny shrub, it was painful to try to get a good angle.

Single exposure, cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
