1992 Toyota Camry 2.2GL Project Car (Pt 1)

For some reason I saw an ad on eBay for this car, felt sorry for it and despite having more than enough projects in my life and things to keep me busy for the next 200 years decided it might be a good home for the straight panels on my estate spares car (which are otherwise of no use on my later Camry Sport). With one owner from new and only 56k miles under its belt it should have many years left in it, surely too good to be scrapped? Damage was never claimed for on insurance, so it’s not declared as a write-off (which it would have been).

Slight issue, car is in Gloucester which isn’t very near Norfolk. Raileasy shows me I can get there fairly easily for £30 on a Saturday.

Next, how to insure it? It’s already MoTed, so it’ll be easy enough to tax if I get there early enough. Call to my helpful classic car brokers confirms they can deal with it for £46 for the duration of my current policy, so that’s straightforward.

Ring the chap and agree a price of £350 (it was up for £400). Book train ticket, pay for insurance, send the dealer a cheque as a deposit. I’m going to collect and drive back a damaged car I’ve never seen before for 170 miles across country, in the middle of January. What could go wrong with a plan like that?

Stay tuned for the next instalment!
