Cranfields Commer lorries at Ipswich Docks, 1964
Another ad from East Anglian magazine, December 1964. Interesting snapshot with the dock buildings still working, the loads of flour being hauled in sacks and what appears to be a sailing barge. All a little different to today - does someone have a shot of this location for comparison?
The Commer lorries look rather impressive. Prentice Aircraft & Cars are still trading I believe, trading as Trucks 'r' Us and still registered at the Felixstowe Road address. This site now seems to be used for Redi-Hire van/truck rental operation, with sales over on the other side town..
Some interesting about the company here: www.stowmarket-history.co.uk/prentice_family.htm from which I quote:
"Another son of Manning III was Napier Prentice he became chairman of the now rebuilt Gun Cotton factory, but made his name in the development of electric power. He founded Bull Motors in 1898 in Milton Road they later moved to Ipswich. He was largely responsible for the formation the Suffolk Electricity Supply Co. which provided Stowmarket with electricity in 1896. Napier's son Courtney founded Sun Petroleum & Prentice Aircraft and Cars Ltd. which at one time leased Ipswich airport. He was murdered in Menton in the south of France in 1975."
Whether the Prentice family are still involved I don't know.
